Challenges bring Opportunities for Test Chambers

The hope of any business in a challenging business environment is that it will bring new opportunities. Due to the COVID travel restrictions, many of our customers are unable to travel to hot and cold countries which has resulted in an upturn in enquiries for our Test Chambers.

One such sector is in Motor Vehicles where we offer climactic testing facilities, known in the trade as ‘soak test’ facilities and these are used to replicate weather / climate conditions for the 3 main global specifications of vehicle.

All manufacturers’ offerings are supplied to operate in 3 main global categories as below –

  1. Arctic or cold climate specification – these are ordinary vehicles that are supplied to colder parts of the world such as Finland, Russia, Norway etc. where it is cold for the main part of the year. Lubricants, gearboxes, rubber seals and components are all built for operating in sustained and extreme cold. These vehicles also include extra in-car heating and engine pre-start heating components. Outside ambient is simulated at between -30°C and -40°C.
  2. Gulf specification – hot weather areas such as the Gulf states, Western Africa, Southern Australia etc. These vehicles operate in extreme heat and would be specified as standard with double air con, sun reflective glass and different plastics to the above and below. Outside ambient circa +40°C. Again, testing for rubbers, gear boxes, lubricants is essential.
  3. European specification – as we use a mix of hot and cold weather usually tested at +25°C to -25°C.

We believe new customers will realise the cost saving of ‘not on site’, as do our current customers, particularly as the migration from combustion engines to electric will mean an increase in the number of vehicles / components that need to be tested as suspension / brakes and other components are having to be re-designed to cope with battery weights and speeds.

This is just one example for a product you can bring inhouse, save costs and set the parameters exactly as you want without relying on the weather in whichever country to which you have travelled.
