Vertical farming is the practice of growing plants under specifically controlled conditions indoors within many stacked layers. Unlike glasshouse production which relies on sunlight, it makes use of LED light to provide different wavelengths of light according to crop and growth stage needs.

The main advantage of vertical farming is the increased crop yield that comes within a small unit area, while also being able to get consistent yields and high-quality produce for 365 days a year. In addition, there is no need for pesticides, much human intervention and most importantly – no reliance on the weather, with the added benefit of the traceability and integrity that supply chains require. Plus, vertical farming reduces environmental impact while improving the supply of safe, healthy and nutritious food, minimising the miles involved in its distribution.
